If you are in consulting, you will probably more advice from the seasoned road warriors in your firm. That said, I’ve known MBB folks who got packed off for their first overseas assignment immediately after training, so it might be worth reading these beforehand.

  • Never check in your bags, you don’t have time to twiddle your thumbs at the carousel. Travel with a carry on
  • Invest in a good bag – Tumi is the usual go-to
  • Keep your important items (passport, wallet, credit card, keys, tablet etc) in the same places. When you are juggling your items to get past security, this helps a lot
  • Invest in good quality ear plugs – you will need the good sleep
  • Pick one loyalty programme and stick with that. Marriott has more properties but the value of points accrued to each night’s stay is lower than the Hyatt
  • If you are staying at a hotel for a few months (Monday-Thursday usually), ask the hotel if you can store a bag with them – you can save on carrying your work clothes and other essentials (snacks, running shoes etc)
  • Learn to work without a mouse, you won’t have a space to use it while on the road
  • Bring medication, a power bank, cash
  • Put an AirTag with important items
  • Be nice to the frontline staff – it makes everybody’s experience far more pleasant. You might even want to bring some sweets/cash for a tip to show your appreciation to the hotel staff on check in
